Between song contests, sponsored walks, new childcare facilities and of course the annual harvest festival, 2007 was a busy year in the Glinsk and Creggs area. The farming community continued to raise funds for the less fortunate this year and just last month seven friesian heifers reared in the Glinsk area began the first leg of a journey to Rwanda in Central Africa recently after they were blessed by local priest Fr. Michael Joyce after Mass in St. Michael’s Church. On the same day, local woman Kathleen Quinn turned the sod on a new €1 million childcare facility in Glinsk. The sod-turning represented the culmination of five years’ work by Glinsk Childcare Development Group and funding for the facility was granted earlier this year. In July, Donegal’s Jody Gallagher took the top spot at Glinsk Song Contest with his song ‘Day’s Gonna Come’. With seventy points, the song had just one to spare over ‘You and Everything Else’, written by Ciara and Cathy Newell of Bellefire fame and it was the last vote of the last adjudicator which determined the outcome, creating a nail-biting finish to the event in Glinsk Community Centre. A memorable event on the social scene in Glinsk was Telethon night which raised the fabulous total of €11,820 for the charity event. Amanda Dowd wielded the wax strips, Petrina Kelly wielded the scissors and the Unbearables took the much-sought-after title of Glinsk Idol on the night! Another major project in the Glinsk Creggs area is the provision of defibrillators in the local community and following training events and fundraising events, defibrillators are now in place at a number of local venues and more are planned for 2008. A Clár Village Enhancemenet Scheme is currently underway in Creggs and new lights have been erected and ducting has been laid to allow the undergrounding of wires in the village. The opening of Headerz, a new hair salon, by Grace Cunniffe was a welcome development in Creggs this year. Grace now reports a thriving business and we wish her continued success in 2008. Pupils in Creggs had much to celebrate this year. In June the school was awarded another Green Flag, proof of the great environmental work which the school has been involved in for many years. Just last Sunday, local pupils were off on their annual trip to the Point Depot to take part in a choral event. Highlights of this year’s Creggs Harvest Festival included a mock wedding, a country n’ western night, an arts exhibition and Fair Day on the Bank Holiday Monday. On the arts front, Creggs-based artist Michael J. Farrell had an exhibition of paintings in Athleague Angling Centre in May of this year. A writers group now meets in the Historial Centre on a regular basis. Creggs is currently bracing itself for the annual trip up, around and down the mountain, which is the Barrie Harris Walk. Roscommon People columnist Frank Brandon has pledged that he will make the trip this year and should he succeed no doubt the trek will be celebrated in style! On the sporting front it was an eventful year, with Creggs reaching the Junior Cup final, only to be defeated by St. Barry’s in Tulsk. A vibrant underage scene is developing at Creggs RFC, while in Glinsk work on both the ladies and men’s football teams continued The ladies team reached the County Junior C Championship final, only to be defeated by Caltra, while the men’s team were defeated by Caherlistrane in the north board Junior A semi final. There were also developments on the handball front, with young people in the Glinsk area benefitting from professional coaching in handball every Saturday morning at the newly built Ballincurry Handball Alley. Local businesses in the Glinsk and Creggs area this week extended season’s greetings to all their customers in the local area and looked forward to continued support in 2008.
