On the Order of Business in Seanad Eireann on Wednesday Senator Terry Leyden paid tribute to the late Liam Gilmartin, the last surviving member of the Roscommon team which achieved All-Ireland success in 1943 and 1944. Mr. Gilmartin died at the weekend (see pages 9, 10 & 11).
He said: “Saturday, 2nd of March was the end of an era with departure of a great Rossie, Liam Gilmartin, a native of Ballymurray, Knockcroghery.
“With late captain Jimmy Murray (RIP) they led a great team which included then future Oireachtas members Jack McQuillan and Dr. Hugh Gibbons”.
