Drinkaware encourages adults to take part in Sober October

Drinkaware is encouraging adults to use Sober October as an opportunity to reflect on their drinking habits and try alcohol-free routines.

The charity said taking a break can help people assess how alcohol affects their sleep, energy, spending and everyday wellbeing, while recognising that experiences will vary.

Its 2025 Barometer found that 63% of adults who drink had either taken a break for a fixed period or would consider doing so.

Drinkaware Chief Executive Dearbhla O’Brien said the month offers a chance to make changes without pressure to commit to permanent decisions.

The charity recommends setting a personal goal, planning for social occasions and telling friends or family about the decision to take part.

Suggestions include replacing usual drinking occasions with activities such as walking, cooking, hobbies or meeting friends.

Participants are also encouraged to keep track of any changes they notice in their sleep, mood and spending.
