Plans have been lodged for the development of a new boardwalk across an area of raised bog in west Roscommon.
The planning application relates to lands at Gorthaganny and Carrowbehy and proposes the installation of a safe-deck boardwalk across Carrowbehy/Caher raised bog.
The proposed development would provide a dedicated route through the bog landscape while seeking to minimise the impact of public access on the sensitive habitat.
A Natura Impact Statement has been prepared and submitted as part of the planning application due to the environmental sensitivities associated with the site and surrounding area.
Raised bogs are among Ireland’s most important habitats and are protected under national and European environmental legislation.
Boardwalk infrastructure can provide controlled access to bog landscapes while helping to prevent trampling and other disturbance to sensitive peatland habitat.
The planning application is now before Roscommon County Council for consideration.
