Government funding for new turnkey social-housing acquisitions is to be phased out, with local authorities and approved housing bodies expected to place greater emphasis on their own construction programmes.
The final date for submitting applications for turnkey-acquisition funding will be December 31, 2027.
Turnkey acquisitions involve councils or approved housing bodies agreeing to purchase homes after construction has begun or after they have been completed.
The Government says the transition period will allow housing providers to adjust their delivery programmes.
Housing Minister James Browne said the change would support more planned, needs-led social housing and reduce reliance on buying homes that could otherwise have been available to private purchasers.
He said a greater focus on direct delivery by local authorities, approved housing bodies and the Land Development Agency would help establish a more predictable social-housing pipeline.
The announcement concerns the funding route for turnkey acquisitions, rather than an immediate halt to purchases already progressing through the system.
