Creggs senior men qualified for the Cawley Cup final last Sunday with victory over Westport. A dry, sunny day was ideal for playing expansive rugby and that’s what the spectators were treated to. Creggs ran in a total of nine tries to Westport’s six. Final score was Creggs 62 Westport 32.
The Cawley Plate final will be played soon, with the venue and opposition to be announced.
U-14 BOYS: Creggs hosted Carrick-on-Shannon for a pre-season friendly. With new players coming in on both sides, a 3 x 20 minute game was agreed in order to trial players in different positions and rotate players in and out so that everyone could get the feel of the oval ball again.
The first 20 minutes saw Carrick get off to a blistering start, running in three unanswered tries before Creggs started to find their feet and produced a try of their own.
In the second 20-minute phase, Creggs scored multiple tries and there were some great breaks from Eli Crean, Tadhg Shea, Adam Mitchell and Donal Towey. On his debut for Creggs, John Kellehan caused significant problems for Carrick.
The last third saw both teams show what they were made of. Carrick prevailed on a 42-29 scoreline, but this was a fantastic start to the season for both sides. As always, it was a pleasure to host Carrick for what is now an annual event.

Next up for the U-14s is a match v Monivea in Creggs on October 3rd at 1 pm.
U-13 BOYS: Creggs U-13 Boys took to The Green on Saturday evening for their first game of youth rugby, a challenge match against neighbours Buccaneers RFC. The conditions were perfect for rugby. The visitors struck first with a well worked try. It took the home team a while to settle into the game and the new environment of a full-sized pitch, but they responded well with some hard carries from the forwards and quick hands from the backs. Creggs eventually crashed over for their first try to level the game at half-time.
Creggs started the second half stronger and from some quick ruck ball and hard running they were rewarded with a second try.
Buccaneers weren’t finished and they camped in the Creggs half for the final 15 minutes, trying to break the home team’s defence. This they nearly did with the last play of the game but for an excellent tackle in the corner by the Creggs full-back.
The result was a 10-5 win for Creggs. It was an excellent display of rugby from both teams so early in the season and if that is the standard going forward then it’s going to be a very exciting season. Creggs U-13s train every Wednesday evening at 7 pm with new players always welcome.
