Wynne unhappy with fixture scheduling Seamus Duke

Roscommon v Mayo  (on Saturday in Charlestown at  5 pm) Roscommon’s minor footballers play Mayo in the first round of the Connacht minor league this Saturday in Charlestown and team manager Gary Wynne and his selectors will be glad to get their competitive season underway after a series of challenge games in recent weeks.   However the scheduling of two major colleges game this weekend in which several Roscommon players are playing will ensure that the Roscommon team will be short a number of players for the game. The clash of fixtures has frustrated Gary Wynne who spoke to People Sport on Wednesday.    ‘We are very frustrated by this clash of fixtures. It’s not just this week that it happened either. I cannot understand why the colleges fixtures and the minor league fixtures are clashing. These fixtures are all made by the same people. It’s a crazy situation’ he said.   ‘We have no problem with colleges GAA at all, however those games should be played during the week — Monday to Friday. Playing all these games at the weekend is doing no good for players on both the colleges teams or the county minor team’ he said.   ‘Mayo are in the same position too. It’s not just us, but maybe they might be a little better able to do without some of their players than we are. Having said that we are looking forward to starting in the league this weekend’ he said. Gary says that Mayo will be very strong. ‘We are up against it but we are training hard. We got a bit of a trimming in a recent challenge game against Meath and hopefully we will learn from that, but it’s so far so good. We are learning all the time and hopefully we can play well on Saturday’ he concluded.    Mayo will provide a very stern test to Roscommon on Saturday and Gary Wynne and the selectors will be looking for a good Roscommon performance to start off the competitive year for his team.   Roscommon’s minor league fixtures: Saturday March 8th v Mayo at Charlestown at 5 pm.
