World champion boxer, Lisa O’Rourke, will be honoured with the Freedom of Roscommon following her heroic exploits at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul last week.
The Castlerea fighter will be granted the honour following a proposal by Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice at today’s (Monday) monthly meeting of Roscommon County Council. The proposal was seconded by Cllr. Marty McDermott and received widespread support across the Chamber.
Cllr. Fitzmaurice, who also received praise for his performance as MC at Lisa’s official homecoming in Castlerea on Saturday evening, said winning the gold at the world championships was a “huge achievement”.
“It was a huge achievement for a girl from Tarmon and we are so proud of what she has achieved not just for Castlerea but also for Roscommon,” he said.
“Only three others have achieved what she has achieved (women’s world title): Katie Taylor, Kellie Harrington and Amy Broadhurst. Lisa has no become a huge ambassador for Roscommon”.
Making his proposal, Cllr. Fitzmaurice thanked all those who had turned out in Castlerea on Saturday night to welcome Lisa and her Olympian sister Aoife back to the town following their appearance at the World Women’s Boxing Championships in Istanbul.
