Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice will oppose the nomination of Leo Varadkar for Taoiseach in the Dáil next Tuesday because he believes a number of aspects of the Programme for Government have not been implemented.
Commenting after Mr. Varadkar became leader of Fine Gael last Friday, Deputy Fitzmaurice said he has nothing personal against the Taoiseach-in-waiting but feels he has to continue to withhold support for the FG-led administration.
Deputy Fitzmaurice said that too many issues had been ignored, including in relation to farming, planning, health, broadband, jobs, housing and transport.
“There are so many issues which were agreed in the Programme for Government and have yet to be implemented.
“The time we have spent in the Dáil since the formation of this Government has been a waste, such is the lack of delivery by the Government – and by extension their supporters in Fianna Fail over the past 12 months.
“That is why I cannot support Deputy Varadkar’s nomination on Tuesday next,” he concluded.
