What would happen if

Just today I was wondering how the world would be without music, or if it is actually possible that people couldn’t exist without any sound. I don’t mean all this show business stuff, including MTV and suchlike, I mean actually what part of our life does music hold and if it wouldn’t be possible to exist without it. I even started thinking what it was like before music was invented, because I am quite sure that music has existed forever.

In my mind’s eye, I can see the first people as they started to walk on the earth. There’s some kind of ape-man going hunting and then he starts to listen, he tries to hear where the animals are and actually through this process of listening, he doesn’t even know that he is hearing the first primitive music. These sounds made by mammoths’ legs are a regular sound that formed the first rhythm.

What were their wives doing at the time? The were surely waiting with the children, wondering when daddy will come back. So, she also listens and tries to hear him approach in the forest and she can also hear the birdsong (maybe some kind of woodpecker or first swallow). So this is my new theory, I think it was women that discovered music because men, the hunters, who were around screaming animals, were missing out on the more sensual sounds, or maybe I can agree that he is responsible for the bass sounds and we know that without them modern music cannot exist. That’s enough, I should stop creating the world now, or I’ll really start believing it. Let’s return to my original topic which by now I have nearly forgotten, yes, a world without music. The answer is simple, no way.

For sure people would be sadder and fatter (remember the pounds you lose Friday night in the disco). Anyway, I am 100 percent sure that without music and romantic songs, communication between people would be really poor and the very survival of the species would be in danger. Plenty of babies were started to the sounds of very romantic music (I heard that I came along thanks to Beatles music, I am not surprised about that).

Now it’s time to examine another question, if hearing can exist without sounds. I don’t have to answer that because you all know the answer very well. Even in our breathing, we call hear sounds and rhythm and if we look out the window, sitting here in Roscommon, we can easily hear the melody of the rain, which heaven has showered us with a lot lately. If you still think about my theory about women discovering music, I promise to return to this theory at a later date, but maybe someone has an even more controversial theory …
