Creggs Rugby Club’s dream of a historic Connacht Junior League and Cup double were dashed at the death by a powerful Westport side at The Sportsground on Sunday afternoon.

Shane Purcell looked to have sealed a smash and grab win for the east Galway outfit on 78 minutes when he raced through the Mayo side’s rearguard to touch down. It was Purcell himself who added the extras to give the ‘Maroon and White’ a five point advantage going into injury-time.

With the sizeable Westport crowd now silenced, it looked as though the first Creggs double since 1989 was very much on.

The Bulls had other ideas, however, and attacked straight from the kick-off. A powerful forward drive and seven phases later, and Cormac Lyons powered over for a try which was converted on the full-time whistle to end any hopes of a third Connacht brace for Creggs.
