Vigils to take place across the county in memory of Ashling Murphy

A number of vigils will take pace across County Roscommon this evening in memory of the young Offaly teacher who was murdered in Tullamore this week.

  The attack on Durrow National School teacher, Ashling Murphy, which took place in broad daylight along the banks of the canal in Tullamore on Wednesday, sent shockwaves across the country.

  A gathering has been organised at the church crossroads in Lisacul at 4 pm this afternoon to remember Ashling.

  Candlelit vigils will also take place at Somers Park, Castlerea, Roscommon town at 6 pm, Elphin at 8 pm, and Strokestown at 8.30 pm this evening. Those attending are asked to bring their own candle with them.

  Meanwhile, Roscommon Harriers have organised a walk/run this Sunday (16th) as a mark of respect and in solidarity with Ashling’s friends and family. The meeting point is Casey’s, Roscommon at 10 am.

  Boyle Athletics Club have also organised walk/run this Sunday from St. Joseph’s Church carpark at 4 pm.

  Organisers of the events have asked those planning to attend to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines on social distancing and to wear a facemask.
