Tyrone too strong for gallant Rossies

Roscommon’s great run in the U-20 football championship ended in the Kingspan Breffni Park sunshine on Saturday when they went down to an excellent Tyrone team by 3-18 to 3-8 in what was a tremendous game of attacking football.

Roscommon began with a bang and ace corner-forward Shane McGinley rattled home a brilliant goal in the second minute. But Tyrone hit back and scored two superb goals before half-time from Oisin Brolly and Shea O’Hare and at the halfway mark Tyrone led by 2-9 to 1-5.

Roscommon started the second half very strongly and within six minutes they had reduced the margin to just a point with Conor Ryan and Bobby Ryan scoring superb team goals within two minutes.

But in the nature of this game Tyrone came storming back and scored 1-5 without reply, Eoin McElhoin scoring the vital goal in the 47th minute – and they never looked back after that.

The game ended on a sour note when Tyrone’s Hugh Cunningham and Roscommon’s Lambe and Ryan Dowling were shown straight red cards after an altercation in injury-time.

Final score: Tyrone 3-18 Roscommon 3-8.
