Two top posts to be contested at Convention

The 2007 Roscommon Hurling County Board Convention will take place tonight (Thursday 29th) in Waldron’s, Athleague at 8 pm sharp and it will mark the end of an era as Johnny Haughey will retire as Secretary after 55 years in the job.   There are two candidates for the vacancy arising – namely Christy McDermott of Oran and Ivan Connaughton of Athleague.    There will also be a contest for position of PRO, as John Donoghue of Padraig Pearses will challenge Tommy Connolly of  Four Roads.   There are nine motions on the Clar, many of which relate to the running of inter-club competitions and which will require further discussion at a future Co. Board meeting.   Four Roads want a two-group SHC after the Ring Cup is over, and Four Roads are also proposing that a county senior league be held. Four Roads also want specific dates to be fixed for the U-21 Championship.   Padraig Pearses wants each club to get two home games in the championship while the South Roscommon club also wants all the Roscommon hurling fixtures and scores to be posted on RTE’s Aertel service.   Pearses also want scoring difference to decide placings in the league/championship table while they also argue that a ‘ball-stopper’ should be at every ground where championship games take place. Roscommon Gaels want a round of the SHC to be played at Dr. Hyde Park.
