Two die in road collision near Ballaghaderreen 

The two people killed in a single-vehicle road collision outside Ballaghaderreen in the early hours of Friday morning last have been named.

  27-year-old Daniel Dolphin from Derroon, Ballymote was pronounced dead at the scene on the R293 between Ballaghaderreen and Gorteen, at Edmonstown.

  Mother of one, 35-year-old Liga Smolaka, a former Sligo IT student originally from Latvia, had been removed from the scene but was later pronounced dead at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar.

  A third person, a man in his 20s, was taken to Mayo University Hospital and his injuries were said to be non-life threatening. 

  Mr. Dolphin was laid to rest in St. Columba’s Cemetery following funeral Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballymote on Tuesday.

  A committal service for Liga Smolaka will take place at Lakelands Crematorium, Cavan this Thursday at 1 pm. 

  Friends of Ms. Smolaka have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover her funeral costs and to assist her teenage daughter. The page ‘Support for Liga’s daughter Viktorija’ has already raised over €8,000. 

  Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R293 at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
