Tributes to ‘highly respected’ detective killed in Carrick boat fire

Tributes have been paid to the ‘highly respected’ Garda detective who lost her life in a boat fire in Carrick-on-Shannon Marina in the early hours of Monday morning last.

An Garda Síochána named the woman as Deirdre ‘Dee’ Finn, late of Ballinteer and Ballycullen in Dublin. Detective Garda Finn was attached to Dún Laoghaire Garda Station and was believed to have been holidaying in the area at the time of the fatal fire.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8 am on Monday morning and Detective Finn’s body was removed to Sligo University Hospital where a post-mortem took place.

Gardaí in Carrick-on-Shannon are investigating all the circumstances in relation to the incident. Garda management expressed condolences to Deirdre’s family and said that support would be provided to them, as well as her colleagues.

Detective Garda Finn will be laid to rest this Friday in Rathfarnham following funeral mass at St John the Evangelist Church, Ballinteer.
