Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has claimed that motorists in the Scramogue Cross and Frenchpark areas are taking their lives in their hands on a daily basis as they try to negotiate what he has called “traffic death traps.”
Deputy Murphy raised the “urgent need” to upgrade the N5 with the Minister for Transport Shane Ross this week.
“Numerous accidents have occurred along this stretch of road from Tarmonbarry to Ballaghaderreen. Lorries and cars are going at high speed through Tarmonbarry and it is posing a danger to pedestrians and cyclists and other road users.
“I have continuously highlighted the ongoing problems near my own native Scramogue Cross as this area is really a death trap which needs urgent attention.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that many people are scared to death going through Scramogue Cross as it is such a death trap,” said Deputy Murphy.
