Local traders remain divided on whether or not the west side of the new-look Market Square in Roscommon town should be reopened to traffic.
Last month, Roscommon County Council indicated that a one-way traffic system will operate there, with the reopening likely to take effect from later this month.
Today, the Roscommon People presents a special online video report featuring the views of some local people (see our social platforms), along with a news report in this issue. The redesign of the Square has itself been widely welcomed, but the mooted return of traffic on the ‘west side’ is dividing public opinion.
In Dan Dooner’s report in the link below, a number of well-known Roscommon traders welcome plans to allow traffic west of the Square, but voice frustration over the removal of parking spaces and loading areas, steps which they say have had a negative impact on their business.
One trader said more space should be given to loading bays in order to prevent illegal parking and traffic congestion.
In contrast, in our special video below, other prominent business people in the county town reiterate their calls for the new-look Square to remain fully pedestrianised – with no access for vehicles.
At a meeting of Roscommon Municipal District last month, the Council indicated that the ‘west side’ of the Square will reopen to traffic over the coming weeks.
