The Roscommon Races went ahead on Monday evening last and despite adverse weather conditions there was a reasonable crowd in attendance with those present witnessing seven races throughout the evening. Unfortunately Tuesday’s meeting fell foul of the weather and was called off. Well-known horse-racing commentator Tracy Piggott had a horse in the Ladbrokes.com Maiden Hurdle. The name of the horse was Sudden Edge and it came in the winner at a fabulous 50/1. Well-known Athleague native Benny Connaughton had a winner in the Athleague C & G Flat Race. Well Oiled was the name of the horse and it was the 3/1 favourite in the race. Other winners on the evening was the J.S Bolger owned Slaney Rock which was the 5/4 favourite in the Irish Stallions Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden. Miss Una owned by Bernard Caldwell won the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Fillies Handicap and the B. Kerr trained Princess Nala won the Lebenane Stakes at odds of 3/1. The Bank of Ireland Novice Hurdle was won by a horse called Hoopy who is owned by John Earls and the Felix Quinn own Bay Venture won the Flemings Super Valu Handicap Hurdle at 13/2. It was also Ladies Day at the races with TG4 presenter and former You’re A Star contestant Dathi O’Shea present to judge the contest. The overall winner was Marese Ward from Athlone while second and third place went to Phil McKenna, Longford and Lorna Brennan respectively. By and large this meeting was a success as not even the rain and terrible weather conditions could keep the keenest punters and racegoers away.
