Chairperson of Roscommon Tidy Towns, Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher, says that while the group is delighted with having come joint third in the IBAL (Irish Business Against Litter) League, work is still needed in one area.
The report compiled by IBAL judges said great pride had clearly been taken in the presentation of the town and confirms its position among the cleanest towns in the country.
Just one area of out ten judged was given a B grade instead of an A, and this was the recycle facility at Tesco.
Reacting to the result, Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher said: “We are absolutely delighted with the result. The IBAL judges can show up anytime so it’s a relief to know we’ve done so well and it’s a credit to the hard work of all involved.”
She did however highlight one area of concern.
“The only place that let us down was the bottle bank at Tescos. We are just asking people to be more civic-minded and to take cardboard boxes with them when they deposit bottles and glass at the banks.
“The County Council has issued fines to people leaving boxes and bottles in the area around the banks so we are just reminding people to be aware of that,” she concluded.
