Town & Country Interiors, Athleague

Town and Country Interiors, which is situated on the main street in the village of Athleague, just five miles from Roscommon town, is located in a large Victorian townhouse which was built in 1865 and has traded as a retail shop since that time. It was built by the Tiernan family who owned the mill on the nearby river Suck. It changed hands twice, being owned by the Haughey family for fifty years before being bought by its present owners Aidan and Tricia Donnelly in 1995. Entering Town and Country Interiors is like stepping into a part of history, you step back in time and the first thing you notice is a twelve foot high wall of drawers and shelving … the original shop fittings. The drawers, which had one time stored the ingredients for all sorts of concoctions including animal cures, powders for making paints and spices, are quirky and uneven from almost 150 years of use. It therefore comes as no surprise to hear that this area of the shop has been listed by the Heritage Council of Ireland and proud owners Tricia and Aidan are delighted to retain these nostalgic features. It is without doubt that these features coupled with a luxurious collection of furniture and home accessories are what gives this shop its unique character and its rich and relaxing ambience. Town and Country Interiors is a huge success story in the commercial life of Athleague. It has expanded steadily since opening its doors in 1995. From a small store selling pine furniture, it changed direction in 2002 when they extended into the townhouse, using the Victorian rooms to show off to the best advantage a range of elegant pieces of furniture.  Each room offers a different style, with an amazing range of furniture, from the classical and traditional to the contemporary. Furniture is available in walnut, mahogany, oak, beech, elm and ash, and the range includes bookcases, nests of tables, writing desks and very fine pieces. Also available are deep-buttoned sofas, and upholstered chairs in luxurious fabrics and Vintage leathers. In the upstairs bedrooms, there are brass, mahogany, French country and Valbonne furniture. To complement this there is bed linen and bedspreads, American quilts, cushions, throws, tapestries and rugs. The bathrooms provide the ideal setting for all of Town & Country’s bathroom accessories. The kitchen, complete with is Belfast sink, provides the perfect backdrop for all types of kitchen accessories, tablelinens, tie-back cushions, pottery and cutlery. A walled courtyard to the rear reveals a two-storey restored cut-stone grainstore complete with arched doorways, and here you will find a range of dining, occasional and antique Chinese furniture. Earlier this month, a major new extension of 3,000 sq. ft. of floor space was opened. This allows the display of a much greater range of furniture including larger items such as sofas, tables and chairs. This area has been sympathetically designed to blend in with the existing premises. Town and Country Interiors certainly offers an alternative shopping experience – something vastly different from the sameness of shopping centres. Shopping here is a totally relaxing experience and there is ample stress-free  parking!  You can browse through the various rooms of the old house and the newly-extended downstairs ‘We have found in the past few years as our business expanded that the shop has become a ‘destination shop’ for customers who come to shop for a variety of gift items and furniture," said Tricia. One reason for the success of the store is that it specialises in unusual and unique home collections which lend individuality and puts the finishing touches to a room. With Christmas coming up, there are lots of gift ideas at Town and Country Interiors, with prices starting at under €10. Frames, scarves, jewellery and candles and decorations, so it is well worth a visit. Looking towards the future, Aidan and Tricia intend to keep extending ranges, looking for quality and value lines from around the world.  Home deliveries for larger items available. Aidan and Tricia would like to take this opportunity to thank all their customers and hope that they will continue to enjoy shopping with them. They would also like to wish all their customers and happy and peaceful Christmas.
