The awards programme, which is run in association with the Excellence Ireland Quality Association, recognises excellence in areas such as shop presentation, customer care and food safety. The national awards were presented at The Killashee House Hotel in Naas, Co Kildare. Speaking at the awards ceremony Mr. Peter Kealy, Managing Director of SPAR Ireland said, ‘This year’s Five Star Awards programme has seen standards rise to the next level. SPAR retailers throughout the country have wholeheartedly embraced the Five Star ethos, and the reaction from our customers has been phenomenal. The ongoing commitment to quality and hygiene exhibited by our retailers is something we’re extremely proud of. The fact that many of our stores have this year been awarded their fifth Five Star award in a row emphasises that we at SPAR Ireland are focussed on consistently maintaining these standards in order to retain our position as market leader.’ SPAR retailers underwent a vigorous assessment programme throughout the year to ensure that they complied with the strict criteria set. Surprise audits were carried out on an ongoing basis by mystery shoppers, SPAR personnel and – specific to food safety – EIQA.
