Writing in his column in the Sunday Independent’s Life magazine, well-known comedian Tommy Tiernan described a period in the 80s and 90s when he was on the dole and spent nights in July chatting to Rossies.
‘It was an eight-year apprenticeship of poverty. Days of the week mattered less than months. April: the start of spring, an extra energy in the air – air that had been purified by the winter snap. July: beautiful, long delicious heat, with no man as your master, staying up till dawn, talking to pretty girls from Tipperary and Roscommon. October: this is the start of it now; are you bedded in for the darkness?’
