Toasting Dora!

If you are looking to mark the end of the Christmas season on Twelfth Night, there’s an afternoon poetry activity taking place in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown, to mark the centenary of one of Ireland’s lesser known writers.

‘Toasting Dora! Celebrate Women’s Little Christmas’ is an informal gathering to celebrate the life and poetry of Dora Sigerson Shorter, whom Douglas Hyde called one of Ireland’s finest storytellers in verse.

A passionate patriot, Dora died on January 6th, 1918. In this session, poet James Harpur will introduce Dora and her poetry, with a look at her life and times, including her contemporaries, writers Alice Furlong and Rose Kavanagh.

Organised by Strokestown International Poetry Festival, the event is free of charge, but booking is required as places are limited. Please ring 071-9633759 between 10 am and 1 pm (weekdays) to book. No previous knowledge of Dora or poetry is required. Toasting Dora! is from 2 pm until 3.30 pm on Saturday, January 6th.
