Now that I’ve got your attention, I’d like to highlight the important work being done by the Roscommon Tidy Towns team. The voluntary group is back on the streets of Roscommon town as preparations intensify for Tidy Towns judging, which is due to take place from June to September.
The team went back to work last month in a bid to improve on the silver medal wins of the last two years.
Cllr. Kathleen Shanagher says the intention is to go one better this time around.
“Over the last three years Roscommon town has been awarded one bronze and two silver medals. We were at the higher end of the silver medal last year so we’re going for gold this year!”
Last year the emphasis was on a swift project with places designated for nest boxes to house the birds.
This year the emphasis is on Roscommon town’s bee population as part of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. According to my sources, the bee population is vital in order to maintain plants and flowers and team members have been busy planting flowers around the town. There’s clearly more to Tidy Towns than just picking up litter!
With Tidy Towns judging due to start within the next few weeks, the hard-working Tidy Towns team has now called on businesses and residents from Roscommon town and approach roads to get on board in an effort to bring home the gold!
