Dr Carmel Heaney, Olwyn Hughes and Nial Tully have all been appointed as directors to the board of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation.
Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation has been in existence since 1993 and exists to fund, support and develop palliative care services to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families in County Mayo and County Roscommon.
Mike Smith (Chairperson of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation) said, “I’m delighted to welcome our new directors to the board of Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation and we appreciate the time Carmel, Olwyn and Nial will dedicate to our organisation. The late John Tully would be particularly proud to see his son Nial serve on the board and carry on the selfless work that John had done for so many years”.

Meet the new board members…
Dr Carmel Heaney lives in Swinford, Co. Mayo and is a Senior Lecturer at Atlantic Technological University. She is a programme Director of the MSc in Quality and Safety in Health and Social Care. She has a particular interest in the development of chronic illness support strategies and services in Ireland. Dr Heaney is a graduate of University Galway and UCD.
Olwyn Hughes is originally from Ballinrobe, Co Mayo and lives in Ballymurray, Co. Roscommon. Olwyn has extensive experience in strategic HR roles both in the public and private sector, where she has held positions of responsibility in Change Management, Engagement, Organisational Development and Design and Learning and Development. She has held both HR and logistics roles of increasing responsibility both nationally and internationally within the Defence Forces. Olwyn holds a Masters Degree in Adult Learning and Development, and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, majoring in HR and Logistics, from University of Galway.
NialTully, from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, is a dedicated and passionate director who has made significant contributions to the healthcare industry and the local community. With a background in pharmacy and a strong commitment to improving patient care, Nial has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. Since 2007, Nial has been an integral part of Tully’s Pharmacy in Castlerea, where he began his career as a locum pharmacist and currently holds the position of Superintendent Pharmacist. He is also on the Board of Directors for Totalhealth Pharmacy Group.
Driven by a keen interest in health and fitness, Nial consistently participates in various athletic endeavours. He regularly competes in 5K and 10K races, as well as the odd marathon, demonstrating his dedication to personal well-being and leading a healthy lifestyle. As part of a fundraising campaign for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice, he undertook a skydive. Additionally, Nial ran the 2023 Dublin Marathon to raise funds for the Hospice Foundation. Nial is also currently aiding his sister in organising a triathlon on the 6th of August in aid of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, in honour of his father, the late John Tully, a founding member of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation.
