Thousands attend Midsummer’s Day with Stars

Thousands of music fans enjoyed a fantastic ‘Midsummer’s Day with the Stars’ in Roscommon last Sunday, with the highlight being a memorable appearance by country music legend ‘Big Tom.’

The Monaghan man – dubbed ‘The King of Country’ by master of ceremonies and event promoter Joe Finnegan – received a huge, emotional and heartfelt ovation from thousands of fans when he arrived on stage.

Big Tom – real name Tom McBride – has been a hugely popular figure on the Irish music scene for over fifty years. When he began his set on Sunday with ‘Four Country Roads’, the audience were in the palm of his hands!   Other stars who thrilled the crowds included Nathan Carter, Lisa McHugh, Patrick Feeney and Marty Mone, while the marathon concert was brought to a close in great style with a superb ‘high-octane’ finale courtesy of audience favourite, Mike Denver.

This year’s Midsummer’s Day with the Stars was complimented by the active support of Roscommon Chamber of Commerce and businesses in the county town, with a country music themed weekend running in conjunction with the big event.

The actual concert – staged at Roscommon Racecourse – began at around 2 pm, and continued long into the evening. Guests were able to watch the Ireland/France Euro 2016 game on large screens while enjoying the early music acts.

A host of country stars performed, to the enthusiastic appreciation of the large crowd, with revellers dancing and singing along to their favourites.’ There were amusements for children and refreshments for all, with a great atmosphere throughout the concert. The entertainers signed autographs and posed for photographs with fans.

The event was memorable for country music fans, but also an economic boost for the town, with many visitors from different parts of the country – and some from abroad – staying in Roscommon over the weekend.
