There isn’t a candle to be got in the parish! – Martin Connaughton on his return after illness

    ‘There isn’t a candle to be got in the parish. The women of the country have them all burned and gone,’ said Cllr. Martin Connaughton addressing members of Roscommon County Council on Monday last, as he returned to the council meeting after a long absence due to illness.             Cllr. Connaughton got a tremendous welcome from all sides of the house when he attended Monday’s Council meeting held in Arigna. The meeting was held in Arigna, as the term of Cllr. Charlie Hopkins as Mayor of Roscommon comes to an end.             Thanking councillors from all sides of the house for their warm wishes, and Mass bouquets during is recent illness, the Athleague-based councillor said, ‘There isn’t a candle to be got in the parish. The women of the country have them all burned and gone.’ He praised the power of prayer and thanked all the staff in Roscommon County Hospital and the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin, saying ‘I owe my life to them.’
