Golf Final heartbreak! The ladies at Roscommon Golf Club reached the final of the All-Ireland AIG Senior Foursomes last weekend at Malone Golf Course, Belfast. Representing Connacht, the ladies won their semi-final against Lucan Golf Club from Dublin on Thursday before taking on Killarney on Friday (29th). There was nothing between the Munster outfit and our heroes from Roscommon and the match had to be continued on the Saturday due to failing light. Killarney eventually triumphed following three sudden death holes in the final match. At home, the men’s competition was won by Eamonn Smith on 41 points while the ladies’ was won by Fen Thompson with a 70. Athlone played host to the Gents’ Scratch Cup last weekend. Tadgh O’Connor from the Heritage Golf Club won the Junior Cup, Benny Fuery took the Intermediate and Pat McCormack triumphed in the Minors’. Other recent winners in Athlone were T. Carmody (AWGS), Pat Ryan (Plumbers), Anna O’Brien (Ladies’ 18-hole), Dympna Hayes (9-hole) and Catherine Fitzgerald, Bree Meagher and Denise Lally (Lady Captain’s Away Day). Finally, in Castlerea, Laura Griffith retained the Audrey O’Donohue Cup with 70 nett while the recent men’s competition was won by Dara Bruen with 39 points. Handball Mixed fortunes Roscommon Juveniles had mixed results in the 60×30 All-Ireland Semi-Finals at St. Coman’s last weekend. Star of the show was Liam Egan who beat Kilkenny’s Jamie Maher in their U-15 match. Never in trouble, Egan won 15-4, 15-3 and will play his final at a Leinster venue in two weeks’ time. Elsewhere, there was disappointment for Magomed Yakhyaev, who was comfortably beaten by Kilkenny’s Jack Holden 6-21, 5-21 in their U-16 semi-final. The U-14 doubles team of Philip Halliday and Ahmed Yakhyaev fared no better, going down 6-15, 6-15 to Wexford duo, Mark Doyle and Ben Keeling. Angling Dolan hooks the cup! Ballinlough & District Angling Club recently held its annual competition for junior anglers on Lake O Flynn. Club chairman, John Ryan, presented the McEnroe Cup to Jack Dolan from Castlerea following a good day’s fishing. Shane Gaffney took home the runners-up prize. The chairman thanked sponsors such as Mick McEnroe, Padraig Campbell and John Gill as well as the White House Hotel for providing refreshments. Pitch and Putt Woodview winners Martha Callinan took 1st nett in the most recent competition at Woodview Pitch and Putt while Doreen Greene shot the best gross score. Competitions continue on Monday mornings at 10.30 am and Sundays at 2.30 pm. |
