Bankers and Bunkers!

We start our weekly sporting round-up in Castlerea where the ladies and gents competed for the Bank of Ireland competition recently.

  Mary Kenny claimed the ladies’ prize while Valerie Callaghan and Aine Nic Suibhne were second and third respectively.

  In the men’s competition, Simon Clarke was victorious with a 62 while Matt Griffith was runner-up with 65. Kieran Rosney (66), Padraig Casey (67) and Johnny Mahony were Cat 1, 2 and 3 winners respectively.

  Male golfer of the year Alan Devine was also presented with his prize sponsored by Castlerea Credit Union, and female golfer of the year Laura Griffith’s prize was sponsored by Miriam Gannon.

  Lady Captain Evelyn Curley, Captain Pat O’Connor and President Fr. Joe Fitzgerald spoke of their pride in having served as club officers for the past year and wished the incoming officers all the best as they assume their new positions in the coming weeks.

  As part of the Athlone 125 Year Celebrations the club are opening up the Gents’ Winter League to members from other (local) clubs. Teams of five can be formed from a combination of members from different clubs or from the same club.

  Meanwhile, the Wednesday Open last week was won by Eamon McManus with a great score of 38 points with second place going to Tom Kilgannon from Ballinasloe on 37.

  Maeve Homes won the ladies 15-hole competition last week with 31 points and Ann Egan Farrell won the 12-hole. 

  Last weekend’s 15-hole Mixed Foursomes hamper competition  at Roscommon Golf Club was won by Ciara Ryan and Des Dowd (54) ahead of Margaret Brennan and Charlie Brennan in second spot (57). Winter Green Fee rates are now in place at Roscommon Golf Club; €15 Monday to Sunday inclusive. Holes 8, 9 and 10 are not in play until further notice.

Darts

League resumes

The Roscommon Darts League resumed last weekend and the home sides dominated. McDermott’s beat The Forge 5-4; An Bothar Rua beat Creaton’s 6-3; The Holly Tree defeated The Hollywood 7-3 while Flanagan’s and Molly’s was called off.

  This week’s fixtures are as follows: An Bothar Rua v The Holly Tree; The Forge v The Hollywood Bar; Creaton’s v Molly’s and McDermott’s v Flanagan’s.

Woodview update

Maura Coyle and Helen Cunniffe hit the best nett scores at Woodview recently while Kathleen Shaw and Sandra Kilkenny boasted the best gross tallies. Competitions continue Sundays at 2.30 pm and Mondays at 10.30 am.
