Handball

One-Wall Blitz!

Roscommon Community College hosted the fifth annual Roscommon Post-Primary One-Wall Handball Blitz in the Meánscoil Mhuire gan Smál gym recently.

  In the Cup events, it was an all Meánscoil Mhuire gan Smál final for the girls and an all Dunmore Community School affair for the boys. Team 1 and Team 2 from the all-girls Roscommon Town school battled it out and in the end it was the team of Eimear Farrell, Niamh Fitzgerald, Anna Campbell and Ellen Cafferkey that triumphed.

  Dunmore’s Team 2 and Team 3 faced each other in the final of the boys’ event with Team 2 crowned champions. The winning team was Darren Ward, Rory Farago, PJ Donnellan and Dylan Coleman

  In the Girls’ Shield event, the Convent’s third team proved too strong in their final against Elphin Community College’s Team 1.

  The final event was the Boys’ Shield event, which saw Dunmore overcome Roscommon Community College (Team 1).

Golf

Captain, my captain!

Margaret Egan was elected as Athlone’s Lady Captain for 2018 recently. Bernie Stapleton is the new vice-captain while Lizzy O’Sullivan (Honorary Secretary), Cepta McLoughlin (Honorary Treasurer) and Catherine Fitzgerald (Handicap Secretary) were also elected as club officers. Kathleen McDonnell, Ber Kenny, Claire Dowling and Nuala Hamilton will also take their place on the committee.

  Prior to the AGM, the following prizes were presented by Lady Captain Noirin for 2017: Autumn Cup Senior: Maeve Holmes; Autumn Cup Junior: Lizzy O’Sullivan; Spring Cup: Noirin O’Rourke; Skipton Cup: Patricia O’Meara; Silver Medal: Anna O’Brien; Silver Spoon: Alacoque O’Connor; Bronze Medal: Frances McGettigan; Birdie Tree: Cathryn Mannion and Maeve Holmes. Golfer of the year was presented to Anna O’Brien who played the most consistent golf during the year.

  This Sunday, Athlone Golf club will host the gents’ Midland Intermediate Alliance. Tee-times from 10 am to 12 pm.

  Last Sunday’s Men’s 18-hole Stableford in Boyle was won by the new Greens Convener, Michael Rush, with a score of 39 points. In second place was Gary Carty with 38 points, the best gross score went to Patrick Egan, and in third was Frank Flanagan with 37 points.

  The Club AGM takes place this Sunday at 5 pm in the clubhouse. All members of the club are very much encouraged to attend.

  In Roscommon, Michael Finneran won last weekend’s 15-hole competition with 33 points, just ahead of Michael Sharkey in second with 32 points. The junior prize went to Simon Walker with 31 points.

  The ladies’ 9-hole competition was won by Ciara Ryan with 23 points with Mary O’Connor in second on 20 points.

  Declan Browne took the men’s seniors’ competition with 35 points while Kay Ruane took the ladies’ competition.

Darts

Home comforts!

Last weekend’s hosts all enjoyed wins in the Roscommon Darts League. Molly’s, The Hollywood and Flanagan’s won their games 6-3 against McDermott’s, Creaton’s and An Bothar Rua respectively. The Holly Tree beat The Forge 5-4.

  In the rescheduled Round 1 game, Molly’s beat Flanagan’s 7-2 and in the rescheduled round 2 game, The Forge were also 7-2 winners over The Hollywood.

  This week’s fixtures are as follows: The Hollywood v Flanagan’s, Creaton’s v The Holly Tree, McDermott’s v An Bothar Rua, Molly’s v The Forge.
