Promotion the aim as Ladies’ league campaign begins in Down
Lidl Ladies National Football League Division 3 (Round One):
Down v Roscommon on Sunday in Newry at 2 pm
The Roscommon Ladies footballers will be targeting promotion to Division Two when they begin their 2022 national league campaign under new manager Ollie Lennon in Newry this Sunday.
The Rossies have enjoyed a good recent record against Down but can’t take anything for granted this weekend.
The new Roscommon manager spoke to People Sport earlier this week and said that while preparations have gone well, the injury list is still a concern.
“We have been working away with a panel of 33 players training but we have had to plan without three established players in Natalie McHugh, Sarah McVeigh and Honor Ennis, all of whom are out with injury,” Lennon said.
“The rest of the panel has been working hard and we have played a number of challenge games over the past few weeks against Laois, Tyrone and Mayo and we feel that we have prepared well”.
Ollie says that while his management team are not entirely familiar with this year’s Down panel, Sunday is expected to be a physical battle.
“Roscommon have played Down a number of times over the years but we are not sure what kind of a panel they have this year. The players would know Down having played them a number of times, but we as a management team we are not that familiar with them,” he said.
“One thing is for certain though, it is always a tough physical battle when you have to travel up north for these games”.
The Roscommon manager once again highlighted promotion as the main aim this term.
“We want to get out of this division and up to Division Two but we will be taking it one game at a time. Our next game is away to Louth on the 20th of February, but we are concentrating on Down now and we hope to do well this Sunday,” he concluded.
