If you were glued to TG4’s excellent coverage of Roscommon’s U-17 final against Tyrone as well as the minor semi-final between Dublin and Derry on Sunday, you would have noticed that both had something in common: players sporting eyewear!
In the U-17 final young Conor Ward of Tyrone went for the X-Men look while Derry also boasted a player wearing sporty goggles for the minor final.
With that in mind and seeing as it’s silly season and Floyd and Conor have had enough publicity, let’s take a look at some other top class bespectacled sports stars and one who should have gone to Specsavers!
The former Dutch international has worn the colours of some the world’s biggest clubs and he also started (and arguably ended) the coolest trend in soccer. His goggles were a necessity as he had glaucoma. He first sported them in a friendly against Belgium in 1999.
A former basketball star with the LA Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks, Kareem was a member of six championship winning teams, Most Valuable Player 6 times and a record 19-time NBA All-Star.
Tyrone native Taylor is best known for his dramatic World Snooker Championships win in 1985 over Steve Davis as well as his rather unusual glasses. The upside down shape was designed to prevent Denis looking over the top of the frame when down to take a shot.
…Should have gone to Specsavers
For the week that’s in it! Step forward Swedish referee Martin Hansson…you know why!
