The final frontier

The GAA championships locally are really hotting up and this Sunday in Dr. Hyde Park the two semi-finals of the Ruby Oil SFC will take place. St. Faithleachs will play Padraig Pearses in the first game at 2 pm while champions St. Brigids play Roscommon Gaels at 4 pm.   All the sides emered from the quarter-finals which were all played last weekend. In the best match of the weekend St. Brigids just about hung on to their title after a controversial  last-gasp Karol Mannion penalty saw them edge past a gallant Strokestown team in Knockcroghery.    Meanwhile Clann na Gael and Castlerea are safe from relegation from the SFC after the weekend games .    Western Gaels and Kilbride will now have to meet to decide who fall through that trap door. Match reports on all the quarter-finals and relegation games and comprehensive previews ahead of the semi-finals are in this week’s People Sport.   There was also action in the Roscommon Herald IFC with St. Croans and Michael Glaveys emerging victorious. There are two more semi-finals this weekend. There is also an important play-off game in the SHC too. Reports and previews inside. In addition there is our usual comprehensive  ladies football soccer  and rugby coverage and this week we have a special look ahead to the Rugby World Cup with Frank Brandon, our bookies corner and our monthly fishing column with Geoff Cooper. There are lots of other sports stories as well as our usual features and the Seamus Duke Sports Column- all in another bumper edition of People Sport this week.
