The award-winning Frenchpark & Districts Childcare Ltd.

Frenchpark & Districts Childcare Ltd (FDCL) has been awarded the Healthy Ireland Smart Start Award which is the new government framework for action to improve the health and wellbeing of people living in Ireland over the next generation.

The Healthy Ireland Award is a mark of distinction for pre-schools who have completed training and shown evidence that their service is a health promoting pre-school and striving to promote and protect children’s health and wellbeing.

Frenchpark & Districts Childcare Ltd are delighted to receive the award for this initiative which was coordinated by  Kara Reynolds and Martina Durkan.

Under health promotion Martina and Kara reviewed the menus with staff and made changes to ensure healthy eating. The menus are low in salt and sugar and list the allergens in all meals.

FDCL has a healthy eating policy which integrates healthy foods and drinks into our four weekly menus, our curriculum and play. We have extended this policy to cover all children’s celebrations with the celebration being around the children and not sugary foods.

In oral health a demonstration model of teeth and tooth brush was obtained and the early years educators introduced this at large group time to introduce children to the correct way of washing teeth.

Our senior early years educators have been introducing emotional well being into the curriculum by using feeling books, puppets and some of their own ideas. As a result of this some of the rooms have introduced feeling trees to allow children to express their feelings.

In the area of emotional well-being we held an information briefing for parents covering the relevance of emotional well-being for children and our way forward with emotional literacy in our curriculum. The briefing demonstrated our commitment to good mental health and emotional health as essential for positive health and well-being for children in our setting.

When celebrating special events the children get to make health snacks for Halloween and they get the wear the birthday badge on their special day.

The Health Service Executive commended FDCL’s staff on the level of competence and learning in practice observed in the centre and their commitment to the programme in achieving the best possible outcomes for children.
