The CSO’s first estimate of operating surplus in agriculture in 2007 shows an annual increase of 7.3 percent. This follows a 12.4 percent decrease in 2006 (a decrease which was influenced largely by the timing of subsidy payments). The estimate for 2007 is based on the data currently available for the year. Comparing 2007 with 2006 we see that the value of goods output by the agriculture sector increased by 7.3 percent in 2007. The value of cattle output decreased by 2.6 percent or €38m. The value of sheep output decreased by 1.5 percent or € 3m. The value of milk output increased by 22.8 percent or €302m, due mainly to an increase in price. The value of cereals output increased by 73.2 percent or €117m, again due mainly to an increase in price. Energy costs increased by 5.4 percent or €17m.
