Subsidies providing 90 percent of farm income

In 2006 net subsidies accounted for 89.6 percent of agricultural income (operating surplus) in the Border, Midland and Western region. For the southern and eastern region, for the same year, net subsidies accounted for 66.3 percent of agricultural income. At state level net subsidies accounted for 75.3 percent of agricultural income. An analysis of agriculture in the regions over the period 2004-2006 shows that over three-quarters of national milk output was produced in the southern and eastern region. Almost a third of national milk output was produced in the south-west region. 60 percent of national cattle output came from the southern and eastern region. The south-west region produced almost 20 percent of national cattle output. Over 80 percent of national cereal output came from the southern and eastern region. Over a third of national cereal output was produced in the south-east region. Somewhat more than half of national sheep output came from the border, midland and western region. The west region produced over a quarter of national sheep output.
