Connacht FBD League Final Roscommon v Galway at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday at 2.30 pm
This is probably a match that neither team needs in the middle of a gruelling league campaign and it will be interesting to see what teams will be on the field when the ball is thrown in.
The way the season is panning out it is probably more beneficial for Roscommon to have a game this coming Sunday than Galway. Roscommon’s ‘no show’ last weekend was worrying and this game will afford Kevin McStay and his selectors a chance to remedy some of the faults that were obvious last weekend. Far more intensity is needed all over the field.
There is a conundrum though, do Roscommon play a strong team and try to restore confidence with a win against their great rivals, or do they try out some squad players who need some game time? It’s a tough one.
What Roscommon need more than anything is a performance. The midfield puzzle has to be solved and it will be interesting to see who is picked in that sector on Sunday. Ultan Harney who may well be an option there, made a brief appearance last Sunday but it is far too early to expect too much from him as he has been out for so long. The Michael Glavey’s contingent is back in the fold and a couple of them may well feature on the panel this weekend.
Galway are going great guns at the top of the Division One table and they will be reluctant to go flat out on Sunday next. After the battle against Mayo, Kevin Walsh will be tempted to rest a lot of his more prominent players. They have bigger fish to fry coming up. A few Galway players are also involved in the Sigerson Cup this week and that will probably mean that they will be excluded.
To win here on Sunday is not high on either priority list but Kevin McStay will be looking for a good display to take on the road to Drogheda on Sunday week. They probably need a win more than Galway.
