Study to determine new future for historic Boyle Courthouse

The future of Boyle’s historic courthouse is set to be examined in detail following the appointment of a company to prepare a feasibility study and preferred option for the building.

Craftstudio Architecture, based in Co. Monaghan, has been awarded the contract for the year-long commission.

The study will seek to identify the most appropriate, viable and sustainable long-term use for the former courthouse and associated buildings.

The work will take account of the heritage significance and physical condition of the property as well as its prominent position within Boyle town centre.

The consultants will assess the opportunities and constraints associated with the buildings before developing a number of potential concepts and identifying a preferred option.

If subsequently approved, the team will also prepare preliminary design work and documentation required to support a Part 8 planning process.

Among the potential uses being considered for the courthouse is its redevelopment as a theatre and community space.

Boyle Town Team secured €50,000 under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme last year to progress the redevelopment of the approximately 200-year-old building.

The courthouse is currently being used as a temporary home for Boyle Library while remediation works continue at King House.

The latest appointment represents the next step towards establishing a permanent future for one of the town’s historic public buildings.
