Stephen Silver found guilty of capital murder of Det. Garda Colm Horkan

Stephen Silver from Foxford in Co Mayo has been found guilty of the capital murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea, Co Roscommon more than two years ago.

The 46-year-old, who has a long history of mental illness, denied murdering the detective garda in June 2020 but had admitted manslaughter.

The members of the jury were told that the main issue for them to decide on was Mr Silver’s state of mind at the time of the killing.

They spent almost nine hours deliberating before reaching a unanimous verdict of guilty of murdering a garda in the course of his duty.

Mr. Silver previously went on trial for murder last year but the jury in that trial could not agree on a verdict.

Stephen Silver’s sentencing hearing will be held on Wednesday, April 19th.
