SOCCER: Roscommon & District League Premier Division side St John’s Athletic will join Cloonfad United in round two of this season’s FAI Junior Cup following a comfortable 4-0 win over the Mayo League side Ballyvary Blue Bombers at Lecarrow on Sunday.
Tommy Hurley and Stephen Francis gave the winners a 2-0 lead at half-time and Rob Keenan and Tommy Hurley added two more after the break.
Premier Division
In the only game played in the Premier Division, Castlerea Celtic kept their hopes of catching the leaders St John’s Athletic alive thanks to a hard-earned 3-2 win over Moore United at Castlerea.
Jayden Tumulty gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with Kailin Barlow equalising. Charles Nevin restored the Moore lead just before half-time. Pedro Jailes and Kailin Barlow scored for Castlerea in the second half, and they held on to take all three points.
Division Two
In Division Two, Glen Celtic remain ten points clear at the top with the race for second place close. Just two points separate Ballyboro, Carrick Town, Cam Celtic/Dysart and Boyle Celtic B.
Ballyboro had a comfortable 6-1 win over Roscommon United’s first team. David and Aidan Dooney both netted two.
Carrick Town beat Lough Harps 8-2 at Ballinlough, Dhurgham Abdullrazzaq scoring a brace. Cam Celtic/Dysart beat Moore B 2-0 at Dysart, David Cummins and David Cunniffe on the scoresheet. Boyle Celtic B received a walkover against Castlerea Celtic B.
Despite terrible conditions, Cloonfad United B and St Cuan’s-Ahascragh were involved in a seven-goal thriller at Cloonfad, with the home team winning 4-3.
Daniel Fagan gave Cloonfad an early lead with a penalty. Darrell Finn levelled. Ryan Merchant restored the Cloonfad lead two minutes into the second half and Sean Keadin made it 3-1 from the penalty spot. Paddy Mongan made it 3-2 but Liam Fleming scored a fourth for Cloonfad. Paddy Kennedy closed the gap to a single score with six minutes remaining but the visitors just couldn’t get an equaliser.
Roscommon United’s second side lost 7-4 to Ballinagare. Aaron Dowd scored four for the winners with Jack Cronin also in hat-trick mode, getting three for the losers.
Women’s soccer
Castlerea Celtic women’s team made the journey to Galway where they played the powerful Salthill Devon side in the quarter-final of the Women’s Connacht Cup. The game went ahead under terrible conditions with Castlerea losing 5-0.
In the Women’s Connacht Shield, Ballaghaderreen are through to the semi-finals following a good 4-1 win away at a very wet and windy Aughanagh.
In the same competition, Kilkerrin United were unlucky to lose 1-0 at home to a good Moyne Villa side.
