St. Comans fund-raising tournament a great success

Take a bow St. Comans! The fund-raising tournament for the Special Olympics held at the club last Saturday was a resounding success and many people seeing handball for the first time were in awe of the fitness, skill and dexterity of the players who gave their all to entertain a responsive gallery.    The Coman’s court was specially decorated for the event and congratulations to Secretary Oisin Naughton, whose idea the event was. He worked hard with the committee to make the fund raising possible.    President Tony Hannon acted as compere. Katie McCarthy of Mullingar sang the National Anthem. A photo session followed and Damien Martin from Comans played Michael ‘Duxie’ Walshe of Kilkenny, the sixteen times All-Ireland Senior singles holder. Duxie won 21.12, 21.6.    The doubles between Joe McCann (Mayo) and partner Michael Finnegan (Cavan) against the terrific Meath player, Tom Sheridan and Rikki O’Gara (Comans), was most exciting and played at a good pace. There were wonderful rallies. Victory went to McCann/Finnegan 21.5, 21.14.    In the final singles, All-Ireland Singles Champion, Eoin Kennedy of Dublin played Ballaghaderreen’s Dessie Keegan, who showed that his power play and ‘killing’ would trouble any opponent. Indeed, on the evidence of this, Keegan will be a real force in the upcoming Senior Championship and in doubles with Joe McCann, they will be a handful for anyone.   Prior to the competitions, Deirdre Kelly with a number of the Olympians thanked the Comans Club.    The Comans Club wish to thank everyone who supported the fundraising and attended the tournament. Special thanks to the organising committee and catering staff.
