St. Brigids win Ladies League final

Division One League Final (Ladies Football) Senior St. Brigids 2-14 Padraig Pearses 3-6 St. Brigids are Division One league champions for 2007 after defeating Padraig Perases in Kiltoom on Monday, 5th August. St. Brigids made their intentions clear from the start when midfielder Brigetta Menton fired over the first point of the day after two minutes.    Pearses tried to respond through Stephaine Carthy when she put the ball wide after a good build up involving two of Pearses’ best players, Jennifer Downey and Olivia Keogh.     Downey put Pearses in the lead on the sixth minute when she beat the Brigids defender Chris O’Malley to fist the ball to the back of the net.    Brigids responded with points from Laura Harrison, Jennifer Conlon and Cliona McHugh. Pearses scored a second goal when Downey beat two defenders to put the ball past Sarah Finnerty the Brigids goalkeeper.   Ursula Brooks scored when she pointed from 20 metres out after 15 minutes of play. Brigids began to dominate midfield through the impressive Brigetta Menton and Mary Beades. Jennifer Conlon began to stamp her authority on the game, scoring a goal and two points before the break. Mary Beades then scored a long-range effort with her left foot.    Aine O’Brien, Claire Grehan and Grainne Cunniffe tagged on a point each before half-time. Half-time score St. Brigids 1-10 Pearses 2-1.    On the resumption St. Brigids went on the attack when St. Brigids best player Jennifer Conlon scored two points without reply, Center forward Claire Grehan scored a third after ten minutes. St. Brigids’ Cliona McHugh gained possession and passed to the in-rushing Jennifer Conlon who gave Katie Moran no chance with a blistering shot to the top corner of the Pearses net. Jennifer Downey responded by pointing a free.    Brigetta Menton was shown a yellow card by referee John Martin after she fouled Pearses’ Olivia Keogh in the 12th minute of play. St. Brigids, now down to fourteen players, raised their game with Michelle Kelly impressive in the St. Brigids defence. Jennifer Downey scored a point from a free.    Pearses began to believe that this could be their day when Olivia Keogh split the St. Brigids defence with a great run to score Pearses’ second goal. Pearses’ Stephanie Carthy burst through to score two well-taken points.    Brigids responded with the ever-improving Aine O’Brien racing through to score a well-taken point. Aoife McDonnell and Jennifer Downey scored two more points.    Pearses piled on the pressure but were thwarted by the high-fielding of Sarah Finnerty in the Brigids goal.    John Martin blew the final whistle on what was an entertaining and competitive League final with Brigids the better balanced team and deserving winners.
