A superb first 20 minutes from St Brigid’s was key as the Roscommon champions qualified for the AIB All-Ireland senior football club final as they defeated Cork and Munster champions Castlehaven by four points at Semple Stadium in Thurles this afternoon.

Jerome Stack’s team played some wonderful football in that opening quarter with Bobby Nugent, Conor Hand and Ben O’Carroll doing well up front. After points from Nugent (2), Brian Derwin and O’Carroll the Brigid’s goal arrived in the 12th minute as Eddie Nolan, Conor Hand and Ben O’Carroll were involved before Brian Derwin finished to the net.

Castlehaven were better approaching the break and with Brian Hurley always a threat they were only four points in arrears at half-time. St Brigid’s 1-7 Castlehaven 0-6.

The Cork side were much better on the resumption and they took the game to Brigid’s. However they only managed two points from Michael and Brian Hurley and Brigid’s weathered the storm to kick on in the final quarter.

Robbie Dolan’s score in the 47th minute was Brigid’s’ first in 22 minutes and Castlehaven reduced the margin to one after two points from Brian Hurley. St Brigid’s sub John Cunningham kicked a brilliant point in the 54th minute. As Castlehaven drove forward looking for an equalising goal Brigid’s broke downfield in injury-time, Robbie Dolan was fouled and Ben O’Carroll kicked the resultant penalty over the bar for the insurance point. The All-Ireland final will be played on Sunday, 21st of January. Final score: St Brigid’s 1-11 Castlehaven 0-10
