This year the Special Olympics World Summer Games will take place in Shanghai, China from the 2 nd to the 11 th of October and Roscommon is very proud to have three athletes from the county competing, Bernadette Carr from Roscommon Town, James Glover from Strokestown and Emma Finneran from Taughmaconnell.     The fundraising and awareness campaign that has been taking place over the past number of months has now drawn to a close and the response from County Roscommon has been phenomenal. A total of €93,115.66 has been raised since January.       Co-ordinator Deirdre Kelly says ‘the response has just been overwhelming and I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who helped, supported, sponsored and contributed to the appeal.     ‘Over 30 businesses participated in the Workplace Challenge in February and over 60 primary schools participated in the County Colours Day at the end of March.  In addition there were numerous other events including charity balls, coffee mornings, sponsored walks, runs & cycles, handball exhibitions and various fundraising nights that all contributed to the success of the campaign.     ‘Yet again the people of County Roscommon have risen to the challenge and everyone who helped should be very proud of this great collective achievement, and I know that we all wish Bernadette, James and Emma the very best of luck at the World Games later on in the year.’
