Sligo Greenway back on track following Iarnród Éireann agreement

Plans for a major greenway in County Sligo have received a significant boost after Iarnród Éireann agreed in principle to a lease arrangement covering part of the disused Western Rail Corridor.

Sligo County Council is seeking to develop a 35km greenway between Collooney and Bellaghy.

The preferred route follows a former railway alignment owned by Iarnród Éireann which closed to passenger traffic in 1963 and freight services in 1975.

The rail company had previously opposed use of the alignment for the greenway and proposed that a route be developed alongside the railway instead.

Sligo County Council concluded that the alternative was technically possible but not financially viable.

The latest agreement means work on progressing the preferred route can now continue.

The greenway project was first proposed more than a decade ago.
