If you are one of the 2,482 family carers in County Roscommon, then the next time a politician calls to your door, you should lobby them for justice for family carers – that’s the message from the Carers Association in Roscommon. The Carers Association is urging Roscommon family carers to vote on carers’ issues in the next election and join their pre-election campaign to lobby local election candidates for justice for family carers. Only 26,800 family carers are in receipt of the carers allowance and carer’s benefit, out of Ireland’s 150,000 family carers. Enda Egan, CEO of The Carers Association says there are stark anomalies evident that must be addressed by a newly elected Government. ‘The clear lack of proper financial and support services for family carers is an issue a new Government must address,’ said Mr. Egan. ‘There are 2,482 family carers in the Roscommon constituency providing 60,415 hours of work per week caring for a sick or disabled relative or friend and saving our economy and our Government over €36 million per year.
