Sheep section hoping for local support

This year’s sheep section at Roscommon Agricultural Show will feature a wide variety of classes including pedigree classes for all breeds of sheep, and a number of cross-bred classes which it is hoped will be well supported by local farmers. Pat Naughton from Stonepark is responsible for the sheep section at the show and he commented, ‘We will have all the usual pedigree breeds, the traditional Galway breed, Suffolks, Texel, Charrolais, Beltex and we have a new breed this year, the Vendeen, a French breed and we have already received a good number of entries in that class.’ Another class will focus on butchers’ lambs and that is sponsored by Madden’s Meats. The classes for French market lamb are sponsored by Kepak.  One interesting class in the sheep section is the child under 14 years showing a lamb. This class is sponsored by Andy Hanly, a founder member of Roscommon Show. Organisers are hoping that the cross-bred classes will be well supported by local farmers. There will be prizes for the best cross-bred, best cross-bred ewe hogget, best cross-bred ewe lambs and breeding lambs.  Judging in the sheep section will begin at 11 am and the overall champion will be awarded the John Kenny Perpetual Trophy.
