Seamus Duke’s Weekend Preview

Kepak Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Finals on Sunday in Athleague

Four Roads v Tremane at 1 pm

From the very start of this championship Four Roads and Pádraig Pearses have looked likely finalists and so far neither side have put a foot wrong.

This Sunday, Tremane will attempt to upset the applecart but in truth it would take a monumental performance from Seamus Qualter’s men to advance to the final. The experienced players in the Tremane team like Peter Kellehan, Niall Kilroy and the Brennans will have to be on the very top of their game to give them a chance here. In the quarter-final they displayed a never-say-die attitude to pip St. Dominic’s and they will need more of that on Sunday.

But it has to be said that Four Roads have cruised through this championship so far. With players like Shane Curley, Brendan Lawlor, Conor Mulry and Cathal Dolan on board, they have the firepower to overcome their opponents on Sunday. I expect the Black and Amber to come through and qualify for yet another final.

Prediction: Four Roads

Pádraig Pearses v Athleague at 4.30 pm

If you cast your mind back 12 months this was the pairing for the 2020 decider and it was Pearses that came through in the end but only after extra-time. Pearses have been impressive in defence of their title so far but they should be wary of an Athleague side who brushed Oran aside in the quarter-final and have a number of excellent performers in their ranks.

David Delaney, Alan Moore, Pat Nolan the returning Ronan O’Meara, the very impressive Ben McGahon, Niall Connolly, Gary Fallon and Robbie Fallon each have plenty of experience at this level and Athleague will revel in their role as underdogs here.

Pearses would dearly love to put two titles back to back and with Padraig Dolan, Eoghan Costello, Shane Naughton, Matthew Comerford, the prolific Daniel Glynn and Cathal Kelly on board, the team from Taughmaconnell and Moore are the deserved favourites. This could be closer than a lot of people think but Pearses look set for another final appearance.

Prediction: Pádraig Pearses
