Daring thieves used tools to break through a slab wall and steal a safe from a business premises in Roscommon town on Tuesday night. The gang promptly made off with the safe – which contained a ‘substantial’ sum of money. Gardaí in Roscommon town are investigating the dramatic burglary which occurred at a well-known bookmakers in Roscommon town on Tuesday night of this week. Tully’s Bookmakers at Goff Street in Roscommon was locked up as normal at 9.30 pm on Tuesday evening. When the premises was opened on Wednesday morning, it was discovered that the shop had been broken into and the safe stolen. It emerged that the thieves had broken through a slab wall to gain entry to the premises. Gardaí described the amount of money believed to have been in the safe as ‘substantial’. Speaking about the nature of the audacious burglary, a Garda spokesperson said: ‘We haven’t had anything that substantial before, with that kind of effort involved.’ The business premises in question backs on to Brogan’s Lane off Goff Street and entry was gained from the rear of the premises. Gardaí believe that a vehicle would have to have been located at or near the site of the premises in order to take the safe away. Tuesday night’s theft followed the second break-in at a business premises at Goff Street in a week. On Friday night last, a break-in occurred at John Kelly Insurance Brokers, also at Goff Street. The back door was forced in and the premises was searched, but nothing was taken. The investigation into the theft is being conducted by Gardaí in Roscommon and they have appealed to members of the public for assistance in the matter.
